Eddie Murphy Reveals Truth About Prince's Basketball Game From 'Chappelle's Show'
“Alright it’s going to be shirts against blouses.”
During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote Coming 2 America set to release on Amazon Prime Video March 5, Eddie Murphy was asked by host Jimmy Fallon about legendary icons. Aside from talking about his memories of Richard Pryor, Rodney Dangerfield and Muhammad Ali, Eddie talked about celebrated legend Prince. Fallon also took the opportunity to ask about the infamous basketball game recounted by his late brother Charlie Murphy on Chappelle’s Show.
Eddie Murphy revealed that the outrageous story is “totally and absolutely accurate.” Murphy noted that Prince indeed challenged him and his crew to play, but they did not have the proper gear for a game.
“We had on club clothes and Prince had on that outfit that was in the ‘Kiss’ video, where he had the little short shirt and the leather jacket with the buttons. He had that outfit on and a little gold chain around his waist.”
Murphy also revealed that his brother really did say the line “it’s going to be shirts against blouses.” “Prince and some dude named Micki Free that used to hang out. They used to all wear that kind of Prince’s clothes so my brother was like, ‘Alright it’s going to be shirts against blouses.’ And they teamed up and the blouses won. They beat the fuck out of us,” said Murphy.
Eddie Murphy also noted that he believes his team lost because their best player was wearing Prince’s shoes which were a few sizes too small.
