Fresh from a collaboration with Stüssy, Mattel‘s adventurous Creations imprint is back with another high-profile joint effort. This time, the label has joined with Star Wars to produce a special edition figure of Grogu — better known as The Child or, colloquially, Baby Yoda — that’s being auctioned off in the name of charity.
Immense, spontaneous popularity essentially granted The Child the power to usurp the eponymous title character of The Mandalorian as the show’s mascot. His debut in 2019 immediately spawned merch, collectibles and countless memes in the Lolcat style.
Mattel Creations’ charitable auction, which benefits youth-focused art charity ProjectArt, is centered around a special The Child plush, complete with a one-of-a-kind levitating Hover Pram. Tucked inside his spherical Hover Pram, which actually floats and spins 2.5” when positioned atop its magnetic base, this exclusive 11”-tall figure includes a blanket and necklace to accurately kit out The Child.
Unable to join the bid war? Mattel still has you covered: the company is also introducing another limited edition The Child plush, complete with Hover Pram, on its site. This model doesn’t float but it is motorized, capable of closing the doors of the Pram at the push of a button.
The Child “served as the perfect inspiration for Mattel Creations to design this ultimate levitating pram for a whole new generation of fans,” said Richard Dickson, President and COO of Mattel, in a statement.
“Mattel Creations is also dedicated to giving back to the next generation of creators, which is why ProjectArt is the perfect partner to support through this collaboration, not only by donating an item for their auction, but also by funding ProjectArt’s Los Angeles chapter for 2021 and connecting Mattel designers with students to cultivate creativity.”
