Vault by Vans has tapped multidisciplinary artist Cali Thornhill DeWitt for an apparel and footwear capsule. Taking on five silhouettes, DeWitt uses thought-provoking photoreal graphics and quotes, particularly referenced by the idea of an uncertain future.
The five silhouettes featured in the capsule are the Sk8-Hi, Era, Chukka Boot, Old Skool and Classic Slip-On. Each shoe features a repeated earth and coffin pattern across their cotton canvas upper. Launching the collection, DeWitt explained that this motif was inspired by “the many people in power in the world who value wealth and power over humanity and nature. If unchecked, the greediness of the few will be the end of the all.”
Discussing the influences on the collection, DeWitt also spoke of the “insufferable, self-obsessed egos of mankind,” adding that the design references “endless spiral of stupidity, the death of privacy and the funeral for the mystery that lies ahead.” Other features include phrases — such as “Last Night on Earth” and “Social Disaster” — embroidered onto the collars and heels of each shoe. Accompanying the footwear is three apparel pieces sporting the “Global Warning” motif.
Cali Thornhill DeWitt’s collaboration with Vault by Vans is due to release at select retailers on December 23.
In other footwear news, Grenson recently launched its “Future Shoes” project with three collaborative boots.
