Since its first aluminium suitcase inception in 1937, RIMOWA has become a staple for luxury travel. Known for its striking yet minimal metal design, the legacy of the brand is now celebrated with the As Seen By exhibit set to hit Art Basel Miami, Florida later this month.

Open to the public, fans and design connoisseurs will be able to see how a diverse collection of contemporary artists have taken the iconic metal suitcase concept and made it their own. The As Seen By series, which was launched prior to the pandemic, has now taken on a new meaning. After the first lockdown and travel was put on pause, the exhibit now provide an opportunity for artists to reimagine travel experiences through recrafting RIMOWA suitcases be reworking its raw materials.

The exhibit debuted in Paris in October with the intent to travel and showcase in Miami. Six new local American artists including Benjamin Edgar, Emmett Moore, Maxwell Arkin, Nicole McLaughlin, Noel Mercado and Sean Brown were asked to interpret RIMOWA’s iconic suitcase silhouette by using materials such as the grooved aluminium sheets and spare parts. Focusing on craftsmanship, each artist created a singularly distinctive sculpture to showcase their rendition of the suitcase.

The exhibit runs from November 30 to December 5, 2021 at RIMOWA Design District.
