As we enter and celebrate the new year, HYPEBEAST has rounded up a carefully curated list of Music Projects You Missed This Week.

This selection includes a full-length release from Grimes along with fresh singles from IAMDDB, Jacob Collier and RMR. crwn also appears with a brand new visual while Open Mike Eagle and REASON paid homage to the late MF DOOM.

Open Mike Eagle – “for DOOM”

The death of MF DOOM was the last piece of devastating news we received in 2020, and despite the fact that he actually “transitioned” (as per the words of his wife) earlier on Halloween, it appeared that a number of his colleagues heard about the news the same time the fans did. Many of his collaborators have paid their respects to the supervillain, and Open Mike Eagle was one of them with the aptly entitled track “for DOOM.”

Grimes — Miss Anthropocene Rave Edition

Grimes celebrated the New Year with the release of Miss Anthropocene Rave Edition, a remix album of her latest full-length. The 11-track project hears renditions from the likes of as BloodPop, Channel Tres, Modeselektor, Richie Hawtin, Tale of Us and ANNA, with the cuts “We Appreciate Power” and “Darkseid” recently premiering on Grimes’ Apple Music DJ mix entitled This story is dedicated to all those cyberpunks who fight against injustice and corruption every day of their lives!

crwn – “From Time to Time”

Following the release of his single “Moment to Moment,” Filipino beatsmith crwn shared a tranquil visual for its b-side “From Time to Time.” The music video is helmed by Deej Fabian and takes us on an idyllic bike ride through the greener parts of the Philippines. As the serene instrumental safely guides us through the roads, a poem by Gian Lao entitled “Before I Forget” sporadically appears and adds a new layer of understanding to the cut.

REASON x Joey Bada$$ x WESTSIDE BOOGIE x Denzel Curry x Jack Harlow – “Extinct (Extended)”

Almost everyone in music was greatly affected by the surprising news of MF DOOM’s death, so TDE’s REASON dropped an extended version of his New Beginnings number “Extinct.” The five-minute track samples Metal Fingers’ “Pennyroyal,” and hears guest appearances from Joey Bada$$ (who also used the Metal Fingers song on his 1999 mixtape), WESTSIDE BOOGIE, Denzel Curry and Jack Harlow.

RMR – “Plots”

RMR spent the last two months of 2020 flipping famous tracks on 4th Quarter Medley, and it looks like the masked artist has another surprise up his sleeve. Dropping a visual entitled “Plots,” the 50-second video is directed by frequent collaborator Pressure and features a guitar-tinged soundscape produced by Lucyd. Subtitles of a conversation between RMR and an unknown person becomes the focus point of the video, hinting that RMR is going after someone who may have desecrated the mask. “Call me when it’s done,” he says at the end, speeding off into the night.

IAMDDB – “WA’HUM”

Manchester rapper IAMDDB started her year with “WA’HUM.” Her newest offering follows a trio of singles, “God’s Work,” “Quarantine” and “End of the World” from 2020, and with her last mixtape dating back to 2019’s Swervvvvv.5, this hopefully marks an upcoming full-length from the exciting and explorative artist.

Jacob Collier – “The Sun Is In Your Eyes (Voice Memo)”

“The Sun Is In Your Eyes (Voice Memo)” is Jacob Collier’s warm and loving entrance to 2021. The track unfortunately only runs for approximately two minutes, but those two minutes are filled with the English musician’s raw emotions as he sings over plucked acoustic guitar strings. As the title suggests, he recorded the cut on his phone “for safe-keeping,” but the low definition audio complements the intimate aura of the song.
