From the popular ‘70s role playing game Dungeons & Dragons to cult-film franchise The Lord of the Rings, fantasy art is a linchpin when it comes to building worlds filled with supernatural subjects, themes, ideas and settings. Practitioners of the genre often reference ancient myths and legends alongside magical forces in their creations. Common features in fantasy art include dragons, wizards, fairies and other mythical creatures.

TASCHEN is celebrating the longstanding art form with a monster-sized book called Masterpieces of Fantasy Art. Penned by author Dian Hanson, the 532-page tome is an immersive dive into the beginnings of the art style from the 1400s to present day, offering plenty of insights and contexts through original paintings, sketches, sculptures, magazines, paperback covers and calendars.

Hanson also sheds light on iconic practicioners such as Frank Frazetta, Philippe Druillet, Jeff Jones, Boris Vallejo, HR Giger and many more. “Insightful bios go beyond Wikipedia to give a more accurate and eye-opening look into the life of each artist. Complete with tipped-in chapter openers, this collection will reign as the most exquisite and informative guide to this popular subject for years to come,” as per a statement by TASCHEN.

Get a closer look at the Masterpieces of Fantasy Art book above and then head to TASCHEN’s website to preorder it now for $200 USD.

Elsewhere in art, Philadelphia’s Shofuso Japanese House is currently exhibiting a slew of mid-century modern objects.
