Philadelphia’s historic Shofuso Japanese House and Gardens was built in Japan back in 1953. Designed by the architect Junzo Yoshimura, Shofuso was originally constructed for the Museum of Modern Art in New York as part of the institution’s third installment of “The House in the Museum Garden” outdoor exhibition in 1954, before being moved to its permanent home in West Fairmount Park. The house also includes a hill, pond with a tiered waterfall, a tea garden featuring a traditional tea house and a courtyard garden leading to a bathhouse.

Displayed permanently inside the museum are 20 contemporary murals inspired by the garden’s waterfall created by Hiroshi Senju back in 2007. Shofusu is currently hosting a new exhibition called “Shofuso and Modernism: Mid-Century Collaboration.” The presentation features textiles inspired by Japanese and American landscapes by designer Noémi Pernessin Raymond, a toy chest created by woodworker George Nakashima, and curated collections of archival and contemporary architectural portraits of the artists.

The exhibition is on view until November 29. Head to the Shofuso Japanese House and Gardens’ Instagram page to learn more.
