'The Last Blockbuster' Trailer Reveals the Once Video Rental Giant Had a Chance To Own Netflix
Premiering December 2020.
A new documentary exploring the resilience of the last-living Blockbuster Video store is set to premiere this December 2020.
The Last Blockbuster follows Sandi Harding, the manager of the still-standing Blockbuster in Bend, Oregon, as she details the store’s glory days and the current hardships of keeping its doors open during the era of the streaming wars. The documentary will also provide a corporate lesson for all, explaining why it went out of business in the first place, how it managed to shaped pop culture in the ’90s and the fact that Blockbuster turned down the chance to purchase Netflix.
Comedians and celebrities will also join the conversation, with the likes of Adam Brody, Doug Benson and Jay and Silent Bob director Kevin Smith appearing in the trailer from March 2020.
“The Last Blockbuster brings the world together over our shared memory of Friday night pizza and renting movies,” director Taylor Morden and writer and producer Zeke Kamm said in a statement. “For us the perfect next step was getting together with 1091 Pictures to release it just in time for the holidays.”
Harding’s Oregon store recently went viral after it was listed on Airbnb, offering one-of-a-kind sleepover experience inside the Blockbuster itself for only $4 USD.
1091 Pictures has acquired worldwide digital and broadcast rights for The Last Blockbuster and will be available for purchase or rent-on-demand beginning December 15.
Elsewhere in entertainment, The Exorcist is reportedly receiving a reboot.
