Sotheby's Hong Kong Spotlights Goku, Astro Boy & More in "Manga" Auction
As part of a series of “pop-up” online auctions.
With lockdown measures still in place due to COVID-19, auction houses have witnessed just how successful online auction programs can be. Last week, Sotheby’s achieved its highest-ever online auction record with its Contemporary Curated sale in London. In response to this success, Sotheby’s Hong Kong is launching a series of “pop-up” online auctions, which will be faster-paced than a typical contemporary art online auction and be centered around a particular theme. This May, Sotheby’s presents “Manga,” the largest Manga assemblage ever to be offered at auction in Hong Kong.
The auction will feature 60 drawings and original Animation Celluloid Pictures presenting some of the most beloved characters from popular animation series such as Dragon Ball Z, Pokémon and Mobile Suit Gundam. These unique drawings and cel-ga were created by acclaimed animation houses like Studio Ghibli and Toei Animation. In addition to the works slated for the contemporary showcase, 100 pieces will be presented in a selling exhibition at Sotheby’s Hong Kong gallery.
