Smoke DZA Premieres New "Praying For My Soul" Music Video Featuring Flipp Dinero
A standout from DZA’s ‘A Closed Mouth Don’t Get Fed’ project.
Smoke DZA returns with a premiere of his “Praying For My Soul” featuring Flipp Dinero.
“I recorded a lot of this album in Los Angeles. And one of the weeks of me being out there Flipp happened to be out there also,” DZA told HYPEBEAST. “We took a trip to the cookies store, got a bunch of goodies and went back to my session to lock in. ["Praying For My Soul"] was the first beat I played for him — we vibed immediately. Shoutout to Sap, he produced that.”
The visual takes cues from the 1995 Albert Hughes film Dead Presidents with a focus on counting profits behind the scenes, shooting pool at Eastside Billiards and driving through the surreal landscape of a deserted New York City.
“We had several ideas for this video but due to the pandemic we had to pull a few audibles,” Smoke DZA continued. “We shot the video in NYC the first day of the lockdown with tons of uncertainty that we would be able to deliver, but by the grace of God and our director Rook we made it work. We channeled the movie Dead Presidents as the basis for the video.”
The New York City staple returned in late February to drop off yet another solid offering in A Closed Mouth Don’t Get Fed via RFC Music Group and Cinematic. The veteran rapper’s latest clocked in at just over 30 minutes and tapped Westside Gunn, T-Pain, Dave East, Wale and more for guest features. DZA balanced hazy introspection with the confidence of a mafioso over some serious soulful and bouncy production from John G, Sap, and Monsta Beatz.
A Closed Mouth Don’t Get Fed follows a rather busy year for the Kushed God. 2019 saw him collaborate with a number of high profile artists and drop eight separate EPs. Standouts included his project with Curren$y for Prestige Worldwide and his effort alongside Benny The Butcher and legendary producer Pete Rock for Statue of Limitations. The gritty “By Any Means” visual is a must-watch too.
DZA also detailed what he’s doing during the current self-isolation and quarantines due to the Coronavirus pandemic. “My current quarantine is homeschooling, grocery shopping, Zoom and IG live with a dash of NBA2K20. I’m always working. I never stopped. I have three more projects done in the stash and I’m working on some very special projects with some friends. I’m very excited about what I have in the chamber. In due time you guys will see and hear it.”
