Since debuting in 1983 as the “shoe for every runner,” Nike‘s Pegasus line has gone on to offer some of Nike Running‘s most well-known products. Now, more than three dozen models in, the Pegasus has become associated with standout support, comfort and performance — and it’s set to enter its latest chapter with the Air Zoom Pegasus 37.

Although the sleek, shapely silhouette is a natural evolution of the Air Zoom Pegasus 36 and offers a look that’s sure to be familiar to fans of the line, there’s several technical tweaks. First and foremost, the 37 is the first-ever Pegasus to equip Nike React foam, replacing the Cushlon setup used in previous iterations. This makes for a lighter feel that’s more responsive and durable.

As is par for the course, Zoom Air is encased in the midsole’s foam folds, but its placement has been slightly altered. Where previous models used a full-foot Zoom Air bag, the Pegasus 37 offers a double-thickness Zoom puck in the forefoot that’s placed differently in the men’s and women’s pairs. This switch offers exemplary energy return to propel the runner into their next stride, and is acknowledged by a color shift on the lateral midsole.

Lightweight, semi-translucent mesh uppers offer a midfoot band for exemplary lockdown, plus a heel that tapers away from the wearer’s Achilles tendon — a design crafted directly from runner feedback. Finally, a recognizable waffle-patterned rubber outsole caps off the look.

To understand the legacy of the Pegasus, you need look no further than women’s marathon pioneer Joan Samuleson, who’s ran and trained in Pegasus footwear for over 30 years. “The innovation, the design and the function of the Pegasus have come so far, but in thoughtful and calculated steps,” says Samuelson. “You want to evolve that way if you want to keep the devoted, knowledgeable runner. Throughout my career, when I wasn’t sure whether I was able to go the distance, the Pegasus was my go-to shoe.”

The Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 37 will release on the Nike webstore in men’s and women’s sizes come April 30. The MSRP is set at $120 USD.
