Wiz Khalifa Raps Over Iconic Hip-Hop Beats on 'It's Only Weed Bro' Mixtape
17 minutes, 7 legendary beats.
After debuting his first single of the new year with “Real Rappers Rap” and the news that he’ll be headlining Rolling Loud Portugal, prolific stoner-rap icon Wiz Khalifa delivers a new 7-track EP in It’s Only Weed Bro.
You won’t find the tape on traditional streaming services anytime soon based on Wiz harkening back to the early to mid-2000s mixtape era by rapping over some of hip-hop’s most revered instrumentals. The quick-hit project is classic mixtape Wiz too, with the Pittsburgh rapper freestyling over Mobb Deep’s iconic “Survival Of The Fittest” for track two’s “Vanity Fair.” Other standout samples include JAY-Z and Memphis Bleek’s “Dear Summer” with Weldon Irvine’s “Morning Sunrise” reverberating throughout as Khalifa’s pace seemingly speeds up to the point of rapid fire bars by song’s end. A nostalgic Wiz contemplates his early days in high school when he first started rapping. It’s also his first compilation of songs since last year’s Fly Times Vol. 1: The Good Fly Young, which, of course, released on April 20.
Despite the EP’s 17-minute runtime, there’s still a lot to unpack from the prolific Rolling Papers rapper’s latest. Curated instrumental selections gives you a look into some of Wiz’s favorite beats from when he first started rapping while It’s Only Weed Bro serves as a nice interlude until we get his next major studio album.
