Thundercat Looks for Love in the Zack Fox-Directed "Dragonball Durag" Visual
Featuring appearances by Kali Uchis, Haim and Quinta Brunson.
Thundercat may be the only artist capable of centering a song around an unofficially licensed Dragonball Z durag while making it undeniably smooth enough be taken completely serious as a love anthem. He’s teamed up with friend and collaborator Zack Fox for the official music video, a hand-held 480p edit that tells the story of the confidence gained through finding the new, mysterious headpiece. Once Thundercat ties the durag around his head, his ability to spit his game at a number of women goes, for lack of a better term, Super-Saiyan.
He shoots his shot at a number of star-studded cameos from Kali Uchis to Quinta Brunson of HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show and all three members of members of Haim. And it almost works too. If John Cusack decided to break out some dance moves outside of Ione Skye’s apartment window in Say Anything, this would be it. There’s even a clean shot of a diamond-studded Vegeta pendant standing out in a sea of chains draped around the musician’s neck to continue the theme.
The original track features production from Flying Lotus and follows January’s debut single “Black Qualls” featuring Childish Gambino and Steve Lacy. It Is What It Is arrives April 3.
