British-Nigerian Rapper Flohio Returns with Her "Heavy (Freestyle)" Visual
The Bermondsey rapper sends a warning shot to anyone getting in her way this year.
British-Nigerian rapper Flohio is hard to put into a box. Born Funmi Ohiosumah, Flohio has honed her craft as a member of the collective TruLuvCru and released her debut EP Nowhere Near back in 2016. Since then, her releases have been few and far between but have always left an impact when they do hit the airwaves. 2018’s “10 More Rounds” was a venomous offering with haunting piano keys that introduced her to a wider audience. She followed up that effort with the Wild Yout EP and boasted collaborations with Clams Casino. Now the emcee returns with her first offering of 2020 in “Heavy (Freestyle)”.
Produced by HLMNSRA, the track flawlessly blends warped and distorted electronic keys with bass made to be played in one’s car as loudly as possible. Even with the eclectic instrumental, Flohio’s verses still ring through. “I need to quit rolling heavy/ But I just rock n roll heavy/ They want my destruction early/ So some things aren’t for me/ Lookout, who’s looking out for me?/ Dangerous game we all playing/ While half of the world moving ugly/ Baby got arms now they ready/ Most of the ends looking deadly/ Swear they resent for the many/ While still on the job doing AM – PM,” she raps, barely taking a breath.
The Ethan Barrett and Tom Gullam-directed music video stands in stark contrast to the hard-hitting single. The visual finds Flohio alone in a field mid-day, standing out from the monochromatic backdrop in a 1990’s inspired royal blue tracksuit. Half-built industrial buildings are scattered throughout the background.
“What I write about is where I was in the past, where I am now and where I see myself in the future,” Flohio told Crack Magazine. “So, in my future, I’ll rap about what I want for myself, my friends, my family. And the present is the bullshit and happiness I’m going through at the moment. I can’t rap about cars because I don’t have one, I don’t bust guns. I’m from south London so I rap a lot about my community. I’m true to who I am and writing about what I’m living.”
