Mozzy Returns to His Hometown for New "Overcame" Video
The Sacramento rapper’s first offering of 2020 is a sun-washed homage to his city.
Mozzy closed out his incredible 2019 with a remix to SG Ali’s “Wicked” featuring an emotional verse about pain, openness and how the streets shaped him. The Sacramento rapper’s Internal Affairs LP solidified his place as one of the West Coast’s most formidable voices with contributions from Sada Baby, Sage the Gemini and Lil Poppa rounding out the stellar 13-track offering. Now Mozzy returns for his first release of 2020 in “Overcame.”
“Ayy, how I’m ‘posed to tell my youngin’ go to school/ When they just caught him at the light rail, stripped him for his jewels/ How I’m ‘posed to tell my auntie not to use/ When she ain’t got no other means or methods to numb abuse?/ I know your pain, baby/ But look at all the other sh*t you overcame, baby/ In search of love, only reason why we gangbangin’,” Mozzy raps in the heartfelt opening chorus over Mook On The Beats production. The track features a fervent pace thanks to backing electric guitars and minimal piano keys that allows Mozzy to take center stage.
The visual, directed by Bay Area-native David Camarena in the rapper’s native Fourth Avenue Park and in front of Oak Park Market shows Mozzy where he’s most comfortable, surrounded by his community washed with California sunshine. Watch the full video above and stream “Overcame” below.
