Junya Watanabe‘s fascination with American heritage often yields workwear-obsessed collections and progressive heritage collaborations. Fall/Winter 2019 sees the Japanese designer keeping in line with that motif, toying with classic college style by repurposing the logo of the University of California, Los Angeles, just as the institution celebrates its 100th anniversary.
Watanabe’s wool UCLA logo sweater is a premium homage to the classic collegiate sweater, utilizing Japanese craft to create an intarsia knit that features the university’s name and logo seamlessly woven into the very pattern of the sweater. The sweater is informed by UCLA’s signature yellow and “True Blue” colors, inspired by California’s wildflowers and scenic ocean views, with no other detailing visible aside from the branding at the chest. Chunky ribbing at the neck, cuffs and hem ensure a timeless, snug fit.
