'The New Pope' Sees Jude Law & John Malkovich's Profane Take on the Papacy
Exploring the idea of two popes co-existing.
HBO has shared a trailer for its upcoming series The New Pope, a continuation of Paolo Sorrentino’s Emmy-nominated series The Young Pope. Once again starring Jude Law as Pope Pius XIII, the drama show introduces John Malkovich as Pope Giovanni Paolo III, the titular “New Pope.”
While an official synopsis is yet to be released, Sorrentino revealed that it follows the storyline of Pius XIII’s seemingly irreversible coma. “So the church has to resort to a new pope, who is played by John Malkovich. But since we are in a territory where reason is overtaken by spiritual mysteries and by God, Jude Law’s coma may not be so irreversible,” he teased. “It may have some unexpected novelties, so that two popes can co-exist in the episodes that follow.”
The two-minute trailer doesn’t actually feature hints of what might happen in the upcoming nine-episode season, but it does provide an almost blasphemous juxtaposition about the papacy. Law can be seen walking on a beach sporting a white Speedo, surrounded by ogling women and a Mother Mary-esque figure fainting over his charm. On the other hand, Malkovich is walking through the Vatican in his holy garbs, ready to take Pisu XIII’s place.

In other news, Ghostbusters is returning to theaters with a special 35th anniversary cut.
unless I am mistaken (and to be fair, I often am), the teaser for The New Pope features a Virgin Mary (or Mary-type) fainting because of how hot Jude Law is in his Speedo pic.twitter.com/ivOerKGN8Q
