Big Sean's "Single Again" Visual Highlights Key Social Issues
“…the main one is for people to ‘wake up and smell the roses’ in a world where we wake up and check our phones instead,” the rapper shared.
Big Sean has shared an accompanying visual for his latest track “Single Again” featuring Jhené Aiko and Ty Dolla $ign. Following the theme of the single, the Lawrence Lamont-directed music video focuses on a newly separated couple and their attempts to live life without the other.
On top of Sean’s performance shots, the video features a short skit of the rapper facing both jail time and public outrage for allegedly cheating on his partner. A news report claims that there’s no clear evidence regarding his infidelity, however many are believing the allegations “solely based on social media.”
“The visual highlights a few social issues, including social media’s ability to sway people’s opinions to the point of disharmony, the social pressures faced by Millennial’s and Generation Y and media coverage of the Black man,” Lamont explained. “While bringing these key issues to light, I also wanted to capture Detroit’s beautiful spirit and style.”
“The video has a lot of important messages, but the main one is for people to ‘wake up and smell the roses’ in a world where we wake up and check our phones instead,” Sean spoke of the video. He also took to Twitter to appreciate his ex-girlfriend Aiko, writing, “I appreciate you supporting me on this one and I want to just say I love you unconditionally. You amazing, talented, every song we do special to me! People gon say whatever but it is what it is.”
