Chaka Khan Did Not Like Kanye West’s “Through The Wire” Sample
“I thought it was stupid.”
Chaka Khan was a recent guest on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen and revealed that she is not a fan of Kanye West’s “Through The Wire.” Kanye broke out in 2003 with his single “Through The Wire,” which most deem a classic. The song featured a sample of Chaka Khan’s 1984 song “Through The Fire” and at the end of the “Through The Wire” video, Kanye delivered a thank you message to the legendary singer.
Well, over 15 years later, the Queen of Funk spoke about “Through The Wire” and voiced her displeasure with the way the song sampled her. “[West] said, ‘You were so instrumental in my healing process. I changed the words a little bit to the song but I had to eat through a wire… It really got my heart, tugged at my strings,” she shared.
Khan then claims that her conversations with ‘Ye went “very differently than how the song turned out,” pointing out how upset she was with how “Through The Wire” pitches up her sampled vocals. She continues, “I was pissed… It was a little insulting. Not insulting, I thought it was stupid. If I’d known he was gonna do that, I would have said, ‘Hell no.’”
