This Cinco de Mayo weekend, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez defended his unified middleweight championship against IBF middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs. Taking over the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the title unification bout was mired in controversy before it even took place as Jacobs failed his secondary weigh-in by coming in under the 170-pound rehydration limit. Jacobs was fined $250,000 USD per pound, paying $1 million USD in total for weighing 173.6 pounds.

When the two fighters finally met in the ring, the buzzing crowd was greeted to a close and competitive match which saw Canelo come up on top with a unanimous decision victory. Early rounds saw Canelo busy, as Jacobs struggled to find his footing until the middle rounds where he was able to slow his opponent. But overall, the Mexican boxer outlanded Jacobs 120 to 89 on power punches to take home the victory. The judges scored the fight 115-113, 115-113 and 116-112 for Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to unify boxing’s middleweight division.
