Although German carmakers BMW first unveiled its M535i back in 1979, it wasn’t until 1984 that the M5 sedan as we know it today began production. 2019 thus marks the 35th anniversary of the original inline-six 282 horsepowered M5, at the time boasting 251 pound-feet of torque and commended by Hemmings as a machine that “all but embarrassed every other car available, at any price.” To celebrate this 35th anniversary, BMW has decided to release a limited edition 2020 BMW M5 Edition 35 Years.

The limited edition sedan is based on the M5 Competition, meaning it’ll boast the same 617 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, a testament to how far the model has come in these 35 years. With power like that, it’ll do 0-60 mph in just 3.1 seconds, maxing off at a top speed of 189 mph.

While its technical performance remains the same as the Competition model, its other changes exclusive to this limited edition are visual. The car gets a new paint job in “Frozen Dark Grey II” metallic paint, specially infused with pigments to give it a silky matte finish. The 20-inch wheels are M light alloy Y-spoke painted a dashing “Graphite Grey”, paired with M brake calipers in high gloss black. For those with an attention to detail, the badge has also been removed from the trunk.

Inside, the limited edition receives M Sport seats constructed with black Merino leather, detailed with beige stitching. The center console has been decked out with a mix of carbon fiber and gold anodized aluminium, extending onto the instrument panel and door trims. As the M5 Edition 35 Years is an exclusive, the usually optional Executive Package and M Driver’s Package will come standard.

If you’re a BMW enthusiast and fancy getting your hands on one of these M5 Edition 35 Years, it’ll set you back $128,995 USD. You better act fast though, as only 350 are being made globally, with the US receiving only 35 of them.

And elsewhere in the automotive world, Elon Musk revealed in an email to his staff that Tesla could be out of money in 10 months time.
