Learn How the 'Game of Thrones' Production Team Create the Show's Stunning Visual FX
This is how Khaleesi rides her dragons.
With only less than two weeks left before Game of Thrones season 8, HBO is upping the ante with a behind-the-scenes look at the beloved series’ visual effects.
Led by VFX producer Steve Kulback and supervisor Joe Bauer, Inside Game of Thrones: A Story in Visual Effects explores the growth of the production throughout the years. Starting off with four ground supervisors, the team has expanded with concept artists, editors and an air traffic control team due to the heavier integration of Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion as the show progresses.
Kulback and Bauer also shared the growing importance of VFX in the series, stating that their initial 600-800 shots per season has turned into multiples of that number per episode. ”The biggest challenge for visual effects is defining what the workload is,” Bauer said in the clip. “From the scripts we have a really good general idea of what we’re doing, but for us it comes down to the individual shots. Every shot defines a method.”
