Birdwell Taps Greg Lauren for Deconstructed Beach-Inspired Capsule Collection
Featuring hybrid chambray shirts and reworked vintage bathrobes.
Heritage Californian surf brand Birdwell has collaborated with Greg Lauren, the painter-turned-designer known for his deconstructed take on wardrobe staples. For its collaborative Spring/Summer 2019 capsule collection, the duo drew inspiration from Greg Lauren’s childhood memories of wearing Birdwell bathing suits and summery chambray shirts.
The collection continues Greg Lauren’s deconstructed nature, fusing traditional pieces such as a denim trucker, sweatpants and shirting with Birdwell fabrics. Bright orange, navy and sea blue nylon rework the classic pieces, creating functional hybrid’s that take elements from Birdwell swimsuits such as nylon drawcords and triple lace fastening.
Rounding off the collection is a towelling robe lined with chambray cotton. Referencing Californian beach-side experiences, the robe features vintage nautical graphics and a wears a classic American color scheme.
Greg Lauren said of the collection, ”It wasn’t an official collab in the normal sense, but in some ways, it was more authentic. I had the concept of using fragmented Birdwells to reimagine another piece of my history, and reached out to Birdwell to see if they’d support and help by letting me use the suits and materials. We connected immediately over the authenticity of my idea, and the personal connection and history behind it.”
