Last year, Jay Rock served up one of the strongest projects of 2018, Redemption. His third studio album and the follow-up to 2015’s 90059 LP, Redemption gave listeners 14 new tracks to digest, including collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Future, SZA, Tee Grizzley and more. Now, for his first major release of 2019, Jay Rock reconnects with Sacramento hometown-hero Mozzy for the Cardo-produced “The Other Side.”

Held together by a smooth, slick chorus from DCMBR, “The Other Side” delivers Jay Rock and Mozzy’s street stories through the lens of muscular, bass-boosted West Coast funk. Having spent recent years proving that they are two of their region’s best emcees, Mozzy and Jay Rock are living proof that the West is capable of providing some of the best street-rap that hip-hop has to offer.

“Body for body it’s really that gangster / My bitches be trafficking off of backpages / 1/4th of a million that’s all rap baby / ‘Nother 1/4th of a million that’s how the trap pay me,” Mozzy raps. “The 5-0 circling double back later / 10 piece of cookie in the duffle double that later / Lot of n***as traded on us during off season / Get you some guala and watch how the peasants all greasy / If I could call a dead homie I would call Deezy / He was tapped in with all the leaders that we all needed.”

Earlier this month, Mozzy also teamed up with YG, Logic and Berner for “Ayy.”
