As moviegoers continue to discuss and decipher Joker, director Todd Phillips recently broke down one of Joaquin Phoenix‘s creepy dance scenes that has become a talking point of the film due to its evocative nature.
Starting off the analysis, Phillips reveals that the scene was changed last minute by Phoenix and himself. Initially, the scene in which Arthur Fleck enters a run-down bathroom was supposed to see him hide his gun and wash off his make up looking back at what he has done. But ahead of the filming of the scene, Phillips played Phoenix a piece of music sent by composer Hildur Gudnadottir that prompted Phonenix to break into a slow and deliberate dance routine. With the 250 member crew outside waiting, the director and actor decided to run with the impromptu direction that tied back to Arthur Fleck’s connection to music.
