Vetements Tackles Censorship for FW19

Demna Gvasalia’s infamous label keeps on ticking.

One could argue that Vetements has lost some of the bite from its earlier collections; the padded shoulders, acid-washed denim and reclaimed graphic T-shirts aren’t as revelatory as they once were. This gives the brand a perfect platform to defy expectations, however, as Vetements & Balenciaga creative director Demna Gvasalia shifts from pure parody to sly subversion, taking on issues of censorship with wry wit.

What does “vetements” even mean but clothes? As such, Gvasalia appropriately utilized these blank garments as templates for a rather overt message, kicking off the show with a T-shirt that laid out the show’s theme in no unclear terms: “There is a dark side of humanity the censors won’t let you see… but we will.” A series of surprisingly understated looks followed (for Vetements at least), with loose jackets, puffers, flowing pants and chunky knitwear executed in neutral black and beige tones. The censorship motif yielded “PARENTAL ADVISORY” tags on shirts, legal seizure forms (filled out with lorem ipsum) and various corporate logos flipped into playful graphics, like the Mastercard logo transformed into Pac-Man.

Check out the looks above.

Most recently, Vetements teamed up with CASETIFY for collaborative phone cases.
