'Deadpool 2' Breaks Box Office Record for R-Rated Film
Bringing in $18.6 million USD on its opening day.
While Deadpool 2 was projected to earn big at the box office over the weekend, the film has already set a milestone upon its debut. The sequel has smashed the record for a first-day opening by raking in $53.3 million USD, including Thursday night previews which brought in around $18.6 million USD. The record was previously held by the horror film It, which made $13.5 million USD in September 2017. Analysts are now predicting that the sequel’s opening weekend could bring in anywhere from $130-$150 million USD at theaters, while easily unseating Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War for the current number one spot on the box office charts. The movie is also on track to break the record for an R-rated film’s overall opening weekend, held by its first Deadpool which brought in $132.4 million USD when it opened two years ago.
The comedic superhero film will be showing at 4,349 theaters over the weekend, which is the largest launch ever for a 20th Century Fox title. In support of the film, Ryan Reynolds who plays the titular character has been making some memorable guest appearances on shows like The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and BBC Radio.
