'Pacific Rim: Uprising' Steals Number One Spot at Box Office From 'Black Panther'
Battle of the blockbusters.

Despite being North America’s highest grossing superhero movie, Black Panther‘s reign at the box office has just been dethroned by another action-packed blockbuster. Universal and Legendary Picture’s Pacific Rim: Uprising raked in a cool $28 million USD at 3,708 locations domestically during its opening weekend, beating out Black Panther‘s $17 million USD.
The film, directed by Steven S. DeKnight, serves as a sequel to 2013’s sci-fi hit, Pacific Rim, and stars Star Wars’ John Boyega and Scott Eastwood. Produced for a reported $150 million USD budget, the film opened with a lighter debut compared to its Guillermo del Toro-directed predecessor, which earned an impressive $37 million USD.
This is hardly a swan song for Black Panther, however; the film is still ranked at number two for its sixth weekend at the box office, making it one of seven highest sixth weekends in movie history, and has grossed an estimated $631 million USD domestically.
