Disney & Opening Ceremony Launch "Mickey the True Original" Collection
Commemorating the icon’s 90th birthday.
It’s been a long time since Mickey Mouse starred in Steamboat Willie, the 1928 debut of the Disney icon and Minnie Mouse — 90 years, to be exact. To celebrate, Disney tapped Opening Ceremony to center its Spring 2018 collection around Mickey and Minnie — held in Anaheim Disneyland’s Toontown, “Mickey the True Original” is a full line of clothing commemorating the characters’ nine decades.
Loose and comfortable, “Mickey the True Original” encompasses men and women’s styling, with a focus on bold colors and a wide variety of Mickey-centric imagery. Ranging from a furry red skirt boasting retro Mickey heads to patchwork Disney logo trousers and sweaters, the goods are dominated with unmissable branding reimagined with a contemporary eye for style. Womenswear occasionally boasts bow detailing, a nod to Minnie’s recognizable headwear, or large circular shoulders in reference to the pair’s ears. Menswear toyed with recognizable silhouettes like track gear and jeans, always emphasizing the disparate Mickey figures and Disney branding — one trucker jacket featured the names of all the Disneyland locations executed in the company’s curly script. Accessories ran the gamut from clunky running shoes to sparkly sneakers, with monotone bags emblazoned with even more Mouse heads complementing the graphic clothing.
