BlackEyePatch Taps Jiro Konami & SCARS for Japanese Hip-Hop Photography Exhibition
Tracing the rappers’ legacy in their native country.
Following the duo of art books released this past summer, BlackEyePatch has teamed with photographer Jiro Konami for an exhibition centered around legendary Japanese hip-hop crew SCARS. The eponymously-named exhibition traces the rappers’ careers from their formation in 2003 to the current day, showcasing candid imagery of the group, concert footage, and more. Recognized for introducing Japanese audiences to the larger-than-life “hustler” mentality introduced by Western contemporaries like Nelly, Cormega and Mobb Deep, SCARS represented an important stepping stone for Japanese rap and hip-hop music.
The exhibition goes down at Tokyo’s COMMON Gallery from December 14 to 23. Limited shirts and skate decks emblazoned with Konami’s photographs will be available during the showcase. Check out a sampling of SCARS’ sound below.
