Yorgos Lanthimos fans are in luck: The auteur-artist is stepping behind a different lens for a photography exhibition coming to Foam Museum in Amsterdam early next year. Titled Yorgos Lanthimos: Photographs, the showcase will include nearly 180 photographs created over the last six years, many of which feature familiar faces and places from his recent films.
Lanthimos announced a break from filmmaking after Bugonia’s release last year, seemingly refocusing attention to his photography practice. The exhibition at Foam will be Lanthimos’ third in a year, following shows at Onassis Stegi in Athens, Greece and Los Angeles’ Webber Gallery this past spring. Known for his absurdist, often grotesque eye for the highs and lows of the human condition, his photography, on the other hand, reveals a more muted, yet no less mesmeric, side of his artistry.
Opening in February 2027, the forthcoming showcase presents four bodies of work, three of which comprise behind-the-scenes shots of Bugonia (2025), Kinds of Kindness (2024), and Poor Things (2023). The fourth is an ongoing personal series, capturing his home, Greece, in serene black-and-whites.
Michael Mack returns as guest curator for the Amsterdam edition of Photographs. For those that can’t make it to the Netherlands, his London-based arts publisher, MACK, has already teamed up with Lanthimos on several books, like shall sing these songs beautifully and VISCIN, with a third, now available to cop. Another, no word for blue, is set to arrive September 2027.
“You can be alone, with a camera in your hand, and you can walk,” he said on his process in a recent interview. “You don’t need to have something specific in your mind. You don’t need to have in mind that you have to do something with it at some point. This is freedom.”
