New Air Jordan 3 Relives the 1988 Dunk Contest
Remember that free-throw line dunk?
As part of Jordan Brand‘s heavy tease of this year’s upcoming products, we get an early look at what is sure to bring back a lot of memories. Touching on an emotional level for those who watched or played basketball in the late-’80s to early-’90s (think Bulls–Pistons rivalry), this upcoming Air Jordan 3 is a tribute to the 1988 dunk contest.
Taking us back thirty years, this was the night when superstars Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins went dunk-for-dunk, only to have MJ come out on top with his famous free-throw line dunk which earned him a perfect score. In the AJ3 “1988 Dunk Contest,” we see an almost-identical pair to what His Airness was wearing during the contest, but with a translucent sole that displays a red stripe — gesturing the free-throw line. Another great historical detail can be found at the tongue where the numbers “147” are present, indicating his final points accumulated during the 1988 dunk contest.
Look for these to drop on February 14 for a retail price of $200 USD and keep up with our Jordan Brand coverage for the latest models from the Future of Flight Los Angeles event. If you’re looking to relive that famous Contest, check it out below.
