'Despicable Me' Is Officially the Highest-Grossing Animated Franchise Ever
Beating out ‘Shrek.’

Following the success of its recent third installment, the Despicable Me series is officially the world’s highest-grossing animated film franchise, kicking out previous contender, Shrek. The series’s debut film brought in over $543.1 million USD ($251.5 million USD domestically, $291.6 million USD overseas) against a $69 million USD budget, followed by two more direct sequels and a Minions spinoff film. Despicable Me 2’s ticket sales clocked in at $970.7 million USD ($368 million USD domestically, $602.7 million USD in foreign territories), and Minions broke even greater box office records with $1.159 billion USD ($336 million USD domestically, $823 million USD worldwide).
