Universal Pictures and director Christopher Nolan have shattered multiple theatrical milestones with the ongoing success of The Odyssey. The R-rated adaptation of Homer’s epic poem has officially become Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date, generating $1.1 billion USD globally to eclipse the $1.08 billion USD unadjusted benchmark set by The Dark Knight Rises in 2012.
Beyond becoming the celebrated filmmaker’s most lucrative project, the sword-and-sandal adventure has secured its place in exhibition history as IMAX‘s highest-grossing release of all time. Earning $289 million USD in the premium format, the film overtook the long-standing $271 million USD record previously held by James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster Avatar. Pulling in $461 million USD domestically and $643 million USD internationally, The Odyssey currently stands as the second-biggest movie of the year behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day, as well as the second-highest-grossing R-rated release following Deadpool and Wolverine.
Starring Matt Damon as the Greek king Odysseus, the cinematic undertaking is notably the first feature film shot entirely using Imax cameras. This immersive technical achievement has driven immense demand for Nolan’s preferred IMAX 70mm viewing experience, which contributed $37.5 million USD from just 41 locations worldwide.
