Summary

Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' has crossed $1 billion USD at the worldwide box office in its third week of release

The milestone marks the director's first billion-dollar film since The Dark Knight Rises and only his second ever

The run positions the Homer adaptation to soon overtake Nolan's all-time highest-grossing release

Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey has sailed past $1 billion USD at the global box office, a milestone that reframes where the director’s latest epic sits within one of the most closely watched filmographies in modern Hollywood. The take on Homer’s poem, with Matt Damon as Odysseus, has now become the 65th film to reach the mark worldwide.

The achievement lands as a career marker rather than just a strong opening. This is Nolan’s first film since 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises to clear $1 billion USD, making it only the second billion-dollar title of his career. That gap is telling. His 2023 awards juggernaut Oppenheimer came close but stalled at roughly $975 million USD, leaving the milestone just out of reach even at the height of the Barbenheimer phenomenon.

The bigger prize is now within sight. The Odyssey is on track to become Nolan’s highest-grossing release ever, overtaking the $1.085 billion USD earned by The Dark Knight Rises. For a director whose previous peaks were anchored by a globally established superhero, crossing that line with a nearly three-hour drama adapted from an ancient text underscores how far his commercial pull now extends beyond franchise material.

The current split shows where the momentum is coming from. The Odyssey has drawn $429.7 million USD domestically and $570.3 million USD overseas for its billion-dollar total. The film also stands apart on content: it is only the third R-rated movie to cross $1 billion USD, following Joker and Deadpool & Wolverine, and the first R-rated title to do so without leaning on comic-book characters.

Format has been central to the story. Nolan shot The Odyssey entirely with IMAX film cameras, a first for a feature, and demand for those premium showings has stayed unusually high.

The milestone also feeds a broader banner year. Combined with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the two films account for around $2.1 billion USD globally and are poised to pass the $2.4 billion USD that Barbie and Oppenheimer earned together during the 2023 Barbenheimer summer. The run has also helped push Universal past $4 billion USD worldwide for the year.

The Odyssey is still expanding internationally, with the film continuing its rollout across major markets. It opened in Korea ahead of a launch in China on August 14, followed by Japan on September 11, leaving room for the epic to keep climbing toward the top of Nolan’s box office record.
