Summary

Tiny built-in cameras will serve as visual sensors for Siri to provide contextual information about objects and environments

The integration is expected to significantly enhance the VoiceOver and Magnifier accessibility tools for blind or low-vision individuals

Privacy measures will likely include a small onboard LED light that flashes whenever the image sensors are operating

Apple might launch AirPods equipped with cameras during the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro unveiling next month. The rumored hardware aims to expand the wearable health and accessibility ecosystem of the tech giant. According to recent reports from Bloomberg, the device will integrate visual intelligence capabilities to let users query Siri about their immediate surroundings.

The project recently surfaced in iOS 27 beta code under the internal codename B790. This discovery suggests development is much further along than a competing camera-equipped prototype slated for a 2027 release. Apple engineers designed these internal sensors exclusively for artificial intelligence processing rather than conventional photography or video recording. The earbuds will capture low-resolution data to assist with physical navigation and task-based visual inquiries.

A key application for the new hardware lies in advancing accessibility software. Earlier this year, Apple previewed major artificial intelligence upgrades to VoiceOver and Magnifier. The Image Explorer feature currently allows individuals who are blind or have low vision to receive detailed descriptions of their environment through a smartphone camera viewfinder. Users can press a physical button to ask follow-up questions in natural language about specific objects in their vicinity. Shifting this capability directly to a wearable audio device creates a completely hands-free experience while eliminating the need to hold up a screen.

To address privacy concerns associated with wearable cameras, the earbuds will reportedly feature a small LED light that flashes during operation. This hardware indicator prevents covert recording and signals to bystanders when the device is analyzing visual data. The approach aligns with broader industry standards for smart wearables while actively avoiding the negative reception associated with continuous background recording.

The introduction of vision-focused hardware follows a clear trajectory for the audio product line. Apple debuted hearing health features in 2024 and added heart rate sensing to the AirPods Pro 3 in 2025. Adding visual assistance capabilities reinforces Tim Cook’s long-standing position that health and accessibility innovations will stand as the most significant legacy of the company.
