Seiko Is Reissuing Japan's First Diver's Watch
1965’s 62MAS makes a comeback.

Japan’s first-ever diver’s watch is making a comeback this year as Seiko has decided to reissue one of its most beloved timepieces: 1965’s 62MAS. Virtually identical to the look of the original, 2017’s 62MAS Prospex is just slightly larger than its 52-year-old counterpart and features a 39.9 mm x 14.1 mm case along with the same dolphin graphic that graced the OG caseback. Inside, however, the timepiece has been given a modern day overhaul. Powered by an automatic caliber 8L35 movement, the hand-assembled design offers a 50-hour power reserve while water-resistance has been upped from 150 to 200 meters. According to Seiko:
The overall re-design was entrusted to Nobuhiro Kosugi, a recipient of the prestigious Medal with Yellow Ribbon and Contemporary Master Craftsman awards. Kosugi has kept faith with the original, as is attested by the 3D embossed hour markers which stand up in sharp relief and yet are an integral part of the dial itself, the luminous dot at twelve o’clock, the slim profile of the case and the narrow bezel.
Coated with a scratch-resistant finish and limited to just 2,000 pieces, the 62MAS Prospex will come with both a silicone strap and stainless steel bracelet and is due out in July for $3,400 USD.
