The First Trailer for Terrence Malick's Star-Studded 'Song to Song' Is Here
Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, Natalie Portman and Rooney Mara star in the SXSW-inspired flick.
After displaying his musical chops in the critically-acclaimed La La Land, Ryan Gosling is set to star in yet another music-centric flick later this year as Terrence Malick’s Song to Song is finally set to see the light of day. Originally dubbed Weightless, the newly rechristened Song to Song is a SXSW-inspired romantic drama set in the Austin music scene and stars Gosling as a struggling songwriter, BV, while Michael Fassbender portrays a music mogul named Cook. Written and directed by Malick with Academy Award-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (Gravity, Birdman, The Revenant) behind the camera, the film also stars Rooney Mara alongside Natalie Portman. Don’t be surprised if a number of other stars make appearances, though: everyone from Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett to Val Kilmer and Benicio del Toro have shot scenes for the film since Malick started the project in 2012, though it remains to be seen if any of them appear in the final cut. Countless musicians are slated to make cameos, too, as Iggy Pop, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Arcade Fire, Patti Smith, Florence Welch, Lykke Li, and the Black Lips — some of whom even show up in the trailer — were all filmed at one point or another for the movie.
Song to Song will hit theaters on March 17 after premiering — appropriately enough — at SXSW on March 10.
