Last night during JAY-Z‘s show in Chicago, the rapper sent a message to his former Watch the Throne partner in crime, Kanye West. After having the DJ play West’s hit “Can’t Tell Me Nothin’,” JAY let out a heartfelt, “Shout out Kanye West. Peace and love.” JAY then followed this message with, “That was for you, Chi-Town,” continued by a few more shout outs to the likes of Chicago’s Chance the Rapper.
Interestingly enough, Ye’s song was cut right after the lines, “I feel the pressure under more scrutiny / And what’d I do?” which the audience finished off by rapping “act more stupidly.” This left many fans to believe that the heartfelt message could be more of a subtle dig at West, referring to Kanye’s tendency to run off at the mouth.
The Watch the Throne rappers have been in a highly publicized feud since 2016, when Kanye brought up JAY and his family during several ‘The Life of Pablo’ concerts; the pair is also embroiled in a monetary dispute involving JAY-Z’s TIDAL streaming service which has yet to be resolved. However, in a recent interview with The New York Times, JAY-Z revealed he had recently spoken to Kanye and insisted the two had mutual respect for one another:
“I [talked to] Kanye the other day, just to tell him, like, he’s my brother. I love Kanye. I do. It’s a complicated relationship with us. [W]e’re both entertainers. It’s always been like a little underlying competition with your big brother. In the long relationship, you know, hopefully when we’re 89 we look at this six months or whatever time and we laugh at that.”
