Japanese designer Muto Kai launched MASU in 2016 with the intention to combine his various interests — ranging from basketball to vintage clothes — into a single clothing line. Kai traveled to India to debut his label’s Spring/Summer 2018 collection.

After stints as the head of planning and production at labels like Man of Moods and JULIUS, Kai set off on his own. His brand blends colorful layers with traditional textiles. Contemporary trends inform the styling, notably with this collection’s track suit and cropped coaches jacket, but MASU’s aim is to create enduring staple pieces. The lookbook taps ordinary people to model the clothing, which includes contrast-collar black coats, long shirting, and colorful, oversized striped T-shirts. The collection includes a range of accessories, like beaded necklaces and richly patterned scarves.

More from MASU can be found on its website. Meanwhile, JULIUS has continued to release collections that blend avant-garde clothes with a streetwear sensibility, on display in its latest editorial.
