  • Innovative materials like featherweight techno taffeta allow entire ensembles to weigh less than a single kilogram

Balenciaga has officially unveiled its Spring 27 collection, titled “Unsized – A Lightness of Being.” Designed by Pierpaolo Piccioli, the lookbook interrogates the house’s fundamental couture identity through an evolution of approaches originally established by Cristóbal Balenciaga. Photographed by Robin Galiegue on the threshold of the house’s historic home at 10 avenue George V, the collection presents a new proposal for modern dressing.

The core of the collection revolves around the philosophical concept of “unsized” clothing, which prioritizes the integrity of the human body as the base for creation. Moving away from traditional rigid silhouettes, these garments feature a light architecture drawn around the body and adjusted to fit using functional ribbons of cloth. The resulting kinetic forms are dynamic and uninhibited, utilizing premium materials such as double cashmere, kid mohair, poplin, and various denim washes. Through advanced fabric development, the house introduces an innovative, featherweight techno taffeta across its archetypal pieces, resulting in entire multi-layered ensembles that weigh less than a kilogram.

The collection intentionally blurs garment typologies by shifting traditional wardrobe paradigms. Casual jeans are juxtaposed beneath plissé jersey evening gowns, while structured shirts are equipped with grand evening gown trains. Conversely, formal evening wear adopts the relaxed attitude of standard t-shirts. This design language extends to accessories and jewelry, where jewels serve the functional purpose of holding volume against the form. Classic Balenciaga handbag silhouettes are reengineered with extreme softness and pliability; washed leathers update the Le City bag, while ultralight nappa leather and nylon linings reshape the Rodeo bag. Deconstructed, malleable footwear completes the lightweight, street-to-salon aesthetic.
