Studio Ghibli Offshoot Releases First Official Trailer for 'Mary and the Witch's Flower'
A must-watch for any Hayao Miyazaki fan.
Although Hayao Miyazaki announced his retirement in 2013, the famed Japanese animator caught the attention of Studio Ghibli fans with a possible forthcoming film, Kemushi no Boro (Boro the Caterpillar). Prior to the unexpected news, the legendary production house broke their promise of never developing a movie again with its announcement of The Red Turtle which will debut at Cannes Film Festival. This time around, ex-Studio Ghibli employees, Hiromasa Yonebayashi and Yoshiaki Nishimura, have formed Studio Ponoc and are set to release an all-new animated motion picture called Mary and the Witch’s Flower.
Based on acclaimed novelist Mary Stewart’s “The Little Broomstick,” the movie spotlights a young girl who undertakes a supernatural journey after being banished from her great aunt’s house—Miyazaki’s incredible sense of phantasm may certainly abound in this film. Nonetheless, watch the first official trailer above and expect Mary and the Witch’s Flower to release in Japanese theaters in summer 2017.
