Justin Son’s Custom Ray-Ban Xan Sunglasses Are Equal Parts Fun and Freaky
Bringing all eyes to the brand’s new Pulse collection.
The new Pulse collection has stood out as one of Ray-Ban’s most daring ranges yet. With sculpted visors and rimless silhouettes, the playful line-up is a contemporary interpretation of neo-90s aesthetics, providing a variety of maximalist frames that invite bold self-expression.
To celebrate the collection, Hypebeast links up with the founder and head designer of rising streetwear label ESENES Worldwide, Justin Son, enlisting him to customize the new Xan sunglasses. The man behind those viral eyeball mules, Son has developed an otherworldly design language that plays on the whimsical forms of storybook characters. Like his past creations, he selects Ray-Ban’s low-cut, matrix-style Xan frames for their alternative style, posing the perfect canvas for his futuristic customization.
As shown in a step-by-step video, Son begins by soaking and molding a textured leather swatch around the arms and rims of the Xan. Then, he selects a handful of beady-eye embellishments and arranges them on a life-size sketch to map out the design. Once he has established the composition, the designer makes slits into the leather and carefully secures each embellishment with stitching to create a clean finish. Boasting a dark and devilish look, the final customization finds the pair reinvented with his signature monstrous style.
