Launched earlier this month, a special editorial project by ASPESI is setting out to examine the purpose of the uniform and its connection to human identity. Through profiling different creatives, the ongoing series – shot by Lodovico Colli di Felizzano – explores the stories behind their treasured wardrobes and how the Italian brand’s “uniform of life” has contributed to the formation of their personal styles.

While the first installment featured plant artist Satoshi Kawamoto and art developer Caterina Licitra, the latest episodes meet architect and designer John Brevard, sharing how his uniform provides context to his life as a creative, as well as Doriana, Elisa, and Lavinia Fuksas, a creative family whose dress sense emanate their close relationships and generational teachings.

Based in Rome, the creative Fuksas family is an archetype of the modern Italian design scene – adapting traditions in their work to stay relevant to a contemporary audience. At the helm of the family is Doriana Fuksas, mother of Elisa and Lavinia, who kicks off the three-part episode with an insight into her 40-year career as an architect. While her work is driven by innovation, Doriana’s style has remained the same throughout her life with all-black outfits. However, today, she keeps it exciting by “playing around with a combination of textures and fabric weights.” It is a functional wardrobe that continues to stay true to herself.

Elsewhere, Elisa Fuksas explores how her clothing is also an extension of her creativity as a director and writer, explaining, “To be a writer means voicing in a personal and controlled way, but a movie is where this comes together.” Her style reflects this approach with simple yet calculated outfit choices that “create a dynamic of keeping thoughts on the inside and portraying a calmness on the outside.” For Lavinia, the influence of her mother on her identity appears to be more evident. After a childhood obsession with her mother’s jewelry, she went on to become a jewelry designer. Now, she uses clothing as a way to express her background, pairing classic jackets with bold jewelry.

Meanwhile, Miami-born architect John Brevard takes the audience to Ibiza in his episode where he now works with his brand’s in-house design team. Known for his geometrical furniture and architectural structures, Brevard’s design language sees him look outwards to the patterns of the universe. “It’s about balancing things in which live in concentric circles such as past, present, and future, but also masculinity and femininity or dark and light,” he shares.

As he appears in the episode wearing a refined outfit of navy blue nylon trousers and jacket, the harmonious balance that exists in his work seems to follow through in his timeless and reliable uniform. An integration of the occasional linen shirt and pair of shorts, however, has since become a recent addition as he repurposed his classic city-focused style for the heat of Ibiza.
