Founder Tim Martin stated that the devices breach the general code against filming customers and employees without direct permission. He described the ban as a common-sense approach to protecting personal space from surreptitious surveillance. The chain equates the discreet recording capabilities to the disruptive audible playing of videos, asserting that patrons caught using the smart glasses will be violating fundamental pub rules.

The crackdown extends well into the premium hospitality sector. Renowned restaurateur Jeremy King has instituted a complete ban across his high-profile London establishments, including Arlington, The Park and Simpsons in the Strand. King emphasized his stance against any invasion of guest privacy that extends beyond natural eyesight. Private members’ club Soho House implemented similar restrictions and now asks patrons to remove the hardware entirely. ATG Theatres requires guests to remove the frames during performances and Monopoly Events instituted an outright ban at its Comic-Con gatherings following complaints of nonconsensual filming. Meta maintains that the Ray-Ban smart glasses include built-in safety features like a flashing LED indicator light that activates during recording. The tech giant also implemented anti-tampering measures designed to disable the camera if the warning light is covered.
