Description

Takayuki Fujii is a Japanese fashion designer and the creative director of contemporary label nonnative. Born in Nara, Fujii found a passion for menswear in the first year of middle school, moving to Osaka to be closer to the urban fashion scene. After tiring of Osaka, Fujii moved to Tokyo to study fashion design under the Scenography department of the Musashino Art University in Tokyo, before dropping out of university in his sophomore year. He then worked as a sales assistant at BEAMS before joining the SILAS fashion label. While working there, Fujii met nonnative founder Satoshi Saffen, whose office was in the same building and asked if Fujii would help expand the brand’s offerings from its initial range of graphic T-shirts. Thus, Fujii joined the brand in 2001 as its creative director, bringing overseas influences informed by his extensive travelling, particularly from Europe and the United States. Under his creative direction, nonnative’s aesthetic is marked by its reinterpretation of traditional work- and outerwear with subtle military hints, combined with premium materials and textiles.
