The Mobile Suit Gundam SEED franchise is officially gearing up to expand its blockbuster “Cosmic Era” narrative with the upcoming prequel anime film, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO. Following the box-office success of the 2024 Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM movie, Bandai Namco Filmworks has confirmed that the highly anticipated prequel will make its theatrical debut in Japan on January 15, 2027, followed by a North American theatrical rollout in February 2027.
Directed by Mitsuo Fukuda, the project holds deep historical significance for the franchise, as its core scenario and initial storyboards were originally developed two decades ago as a planned OVA by the late lead writer Chiaki Morosawa. Now fully realized for the silver screen, the film places Shinn Asuka squarely at the center of the story, serving as a crucial narrative bridge that sets the stage for the highest-earning Gundam feature in Japanese history.
