Now you can gear up for Roy Lichtenstein’s landmark New York show in style, courtesy of this Gap and the Whitney Museum collection. A new collaboration between the two, in tandem with the artist’s estate, unveils a limited-edition lineup just a few days ahead of the Like New opening, reworking some of the Pop Art’s most beloved works into everyday staples.
The collection spans 18 pieces, including garments, accessories, and homeware. Here, works from the Standing Explosion land across a hoodie, varsity jacket, and poplin top. “Crying Girl” (1963) and “Girl in Window” (1963) make their way onto graphic tees. The red-and-blue Benday dots from the Monet-inspired Cathedral series appear on a quarter-zip pullover and sweatshirt. Even Lichtenstein’s cheeky texts get a turn, with phrases like “Sweet Dreams, Baby!” and “Ohhh…Alright…” appearing on caps.
Akin to career-spanning Whitney forthcomer, the Gap collection follows suit, putting some of Lichtenstein’s less familiar work back in the spotlight. Deep cuts get their praise in pieces like the Laughing Cat Sweater, features a painting included in his breakthrough 1962 solo at Leo Castelli Gallery.
Like New, curated by Meg Onli and Alex Da Corte, brings together more than 130 works spanning six decades and opens October 11. The Gap x Whitney x Roy Lichtenstein collection will be available starting October 7 online via Gap and the Whitney Museum.
