Disney has confirmed that Zootopia 2 has officially surpassed Inside Out 2 to become Hollywood’s highest-grossing animated film of all time. The sequel has generated $1.7 billion USD globally, edging out the $1.69 billion USD record set just last year by Pixar’s emotional sequel. Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman celebrated the milestone in a statement, crediting the “extraordinary achievement” to the enthusiasm of fans worldwide and the work of filmmakers Jared Bush, Byron Howard, and Yvett Merino.
The film’s box office dominance is largely driven by its international performance, which accounts for $1.31 billion USD of the total gross, compared to the US domestic $390 million USD earning. China has proven to be a particularly explosive market for the franchise, contributing $619 million USD — making Zootopia 2 the second-highest-grossing Hollywood film in the country’s history, only behind Avengers: Endgame. The sequel also holds the record as the fastest animated Hollywood film to cross the $1 billion USD mark.
Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, Zootopia 2 reunites Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman as the dynamic rabbit-and-fox duo. The sequel follows the pair as they investigate a mysterious new reptilian resident, voiced by newcomer Ke Huy Quan.
