Summary
- Live Out Studio’s Terracotta Breath House in Da Nang responds to tropical climate and tube house typology
- A perforated terracotta façade filters sunlight, enables ventilation and creates dynamic light effects
- Earthy terracotta, raw concrete, and wood define the minimalist, nature-connected interior
Located in the coastal city of Da Nang, Vietnam, the Terracotta Breath house by Live Out Studio is a residential project designed to provide a tranquil sanctuary that breathes amidst a dense urban environment. The design is a response to the local tropical climate and the narrow “tube house” typology common in the region. By prioritizing natural ventilation and light, the studio created a living space that feels connected to nature while maintaining privacy from the bustling street.
The house is characterized by its striking facade of terracotta bricks, which are arranged in a perforated pattern to act as a “breathing” skin. This brickwork serves multiple functions: it filters harsh sunlight, facilitates cross-ventilation, and creates a rhythmic play of light and shadow throughout the interior. Inside, the home is organized around a central void and internal courtyards, which allow greenery to thrive on every level and ensure that fresh air circulates deep into the living spaces.
Materially, the project emphasizes honesty and local craftsmanship, pairing the earthy tones of the terracotta with raw concrete and warm wood. The minimalist interior design focuses on essential forms, allowing the changing natural light and growing plants to define the atmosphere of the home.
